Emergencies will be attended Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., at the headquarters of IOM (Ophthalmologic Institute of Majorca). Out of this time, you have at your disposal our 24h ward service, which is located at Clínica Rotger in Palma.

Below we outline the tests to be carried out in the first preoperative consultation, which will last for an approximate time of less than two hours:

  • Eye examination. The examination studies the front of the eye and it is carried out via a biomicroscopy on the slit lamp and additional tests.
  • Tonometry: In order to measure the intraocular pressure of the eye. The device used for this purpose is a tonometer.
  • Testing of sight and measurement of visual acuity. It consists of measuring the patient´s exact prescription and their ability to see. In order to obtain this, an autorefractor is used along with different lenses with an optotype.
  • Corneal topography. It makes it possible to study the cornea in great detail in order to check that it is healthy and can be operated on. It is achieved via the use of a specific corneal topographer (called a Pentacam) that assesses all of its areas in order to foresee and prevent postoperative problems.
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). It is used to obtain the pachymetry of each eye, which is the thickness of the cornea.
  • Biometrics. It offers all the data needed for surgery, such as the diameter of the cornea, and the total length of the eye (and is also used for any future cataracts operation).
